6 Energy Saving Tips During The Winter Season

It’s that time of the year again. Time to turn the heater on.

​If you’re not used to the cold, you’re mostly likely to leave the heater running all day and night. This doing will cost you to pay a high electrical bill, and that can certainly put a damper on things.

To help you save money this winter, we’ve put together these six energy saving tips during this season:

 Tip #1 Bundle up
A simple and free way to help minimize the heat consumption at home is to wear warm comfortable clothes all day and night. By doing so, the heater can be turned down even just a bit. To add more warmth, one can also put additional blankets on the couch and rugs to the floor. It can help save at least 1-2 percent of the heater’s function.
Tip #2 Take advantage of the sun
Let the sunlight come in during the day. Open the curtains, blinds, and shades of the windows facing the west and south side, as the sun shines naturally from there. Don’t forget to close them at nighttime or as soon as the sun goes down, to help insulate and avoid the chill from the outside.
Tip #3 Find and seal leaks
Any opening means there is a way in and a way out. Therefore, if cold air can get inside, then warm air can get outside. So be sure to seal up every gaps than can be found on the windows, doors, vents, and even pipes. To seal and secure the windows and doors put draft guards, and then use sealants around pipes and vents. If the gaps are too big, just check with the nearest hardware store on what’s best to use to seal them up.
Tip #4 Adjust the thermostat
It’s like an auto response for one to turn up the thermostat when the cold weather seeps in. However, it can cost too much when it is used too much. That’s why it’s practical to monitor and turn it down once in a while. Limit the heat to small areas and only turn up the heat when and where there are people. For example, the thermostat can be set at 68 degrees Celsius during daytime if people are staying home but if nobody is home, the thermostat can be left at about 55 degrees Celsius. During nighttime when it’s colder, the thermostat can be turned up to 68 degrees Celsius. However, turn it down when it is time to sleep, because being covered with warm blankets while in bed already gives extra warmth.
Tip #5 Keep the furnace clear
It is important to keep the furnace clean and unblocked. It is best to have it tuned up and checked before winter comes. It is advisable that the furnace filter is changed every month or as needed.

Tip #6 Be smart about the water temp and use energy-efficient lighting.
Try turning down the water heater to 120-125 degrees Fahrenheit, and cover it with insulating jackets to prevent excess heat loss. Also, use LED (light-emitting diode) lights to decorate your home this winter holiday season.
